Gum boils, also known as abscesses, appear like small swollen bump inside the mouth and may cause pain. They occur because of infection triggered by bacteria on the gum.

A gum boil can cause serious problems when left untreated. The infection may develop close to the tooth and reach other parts of the body, which would require antibiotics or dental procedures, such as root canal, to be removed.

Boils commonly appear after gum disease or dental surgery. But the people with tooth decay or trauma may also find the swollen bumps in their mouth because of infection.

It may begin small in the mouth, which in many cases people ignore. But the effects of gum boils can lead to serious problems that may require immediate medical attention.

If left untreated, the infection may spread to other parts of the mouth and the body, leading to loss of a tooth or a life threatening condition when bacteria enters the bloodstream, according to ( Medical News Today.

The common symptoms of gum boils include bad breath, an earache, bleeding or discharge from the boil and pain, swelling and tenderness in the mouth. Some people may also experience nausea and a fever because of the infection.

Dentists commonly recommend antibiotics to treat and prevent boils. Such medications work to kill the bacteria that trigger the infection.

In some cases, a patient may undergo denture adjustment, deep cleaning or drainage to remove gum boils. When the condition spreads to nearby teeth and bones, a dental surgery may be required to remove the affected tooth or fix bone damage.

But there are simply ways that can either help prevent gum boils or support medications in treating the infection.

Remedies For Gum Boils

Good Oral Hygiene

Prioritizing your oral health everyday can help prevent bacteria from causing any infection. A good oral hygiene can block gum boils, tooth decay and gum disease, among other dental problems.

Simply brush your teeth twice a day, floss daily and meet a dentist for checkup.


One study found that using saltwater for mouthwash could help improve gum health and speed up healing of mouth ulcers. Salt offers antibacterial and anti-inflammatory effects.

Turmeric Paste

Turmeric contains curcumin, which has been linked to lower risk of gum disease. Previous research suggested that turmeric mouthwash could help remove bacteria and plaque from the mouth and reduce inflammation.

Hydrogen Peroxide

Hydrogen peroxide also offers antibacterial properties. Researchers previously discovered that using the compound for mouthwash could reduce symptoms of gum disease.

Hydrogen peroxide can also help alleviate the pain and inflammation caused by gum boils.

Avoid Smoking

Yes, quitting smoking is one of the best remedies to fight gum problems. Cigarettes have long been linked to gum disease. Smoking also blocks the effects of treatments, causing wounds to take longer time to heal and allowing bacteria to spread.
