Guineas Countdown: Teggiano scare for Godolphin; 1,000 Guineas hope bangs knee en route as Dubai contingent arrives in Newmarket.

THE first batch of Godolphin horses arrived in Newmarket from Dubai yesterday-but not without a minor scare.

Teggiano, last season's top-rated juvenile filly and due to contest Sunday's Sagitta 1,000 Guineas, banged a knee during the flight and, if she shows signs of soreness, could yet be rerouted to the French equivalent.

A total of 35 Godolphin-trained horses arrived yesterday-with another 30 or so due today-in preparation for a crucial weekend for the team, which will have runners on both sides of the Atlantic and have been boosted by the fact that China Visit appears virtually certain to get a run in the Kentucky Derby on Saturday night.

Teggiano would provide Godolphin with a classy second-string for the 1,000 and Simon Crisford, Godolphin's racing manager, was able to report last night: "Teggiano banged a knee during the flight from Dubai but, fortunately, she's 100 per cent sound now and I don't think it will be an issue."

He added: "She's an intended runner at this time, but obviously we'll have to see how she is over the next 48 hours.

"If there is any question mark over her soundness then she won't run, but situations like this are only a worry when the injury is associated with soreness and lameness and, in this case, there is no soreness or lameness.

"We'll see what it's like tomorrow-these things can go any way. She could be 100 per cent tomorrow, or she may be feeling it. But I think that's very unlikely."

Crisford continued: "If there's a doubt, then it is a question of whether her owner chooses to wait for the French Guineas."

Last season's Group 1 Fillies' Mile winner Teggiano was the only casualty among the arrivals, who also

included 1,000 Guineas second favourite Bintalreef and Fath, Godolphin's leading hope for Saturday's Sagitta 2,000 Guineas and the mount of Richard Hills in the colts' Classic.

Others flown in were Vodafone Derby hopes River's Curtain and Dubai Two Thousand, who may run at Newmarket later this week.

Frankie Dettori jets back from riding China Visit in the Kentucky Derby to partner Bintalreef, but no jockey has yet been decided on for Teggiano, should she take her chance.

Crisford said: "We've got the likes of John Carroll, Ted Durcan and Daragh O'Donohoe."

Connections hope the ground- currently good to soft-dries out for Fath. Crisford said: "Frankie rides Bintalreef and she won her trial well in Dubai. She's a sweet filly with plenty of class. If she puts it all together she'll run a good race."

He continued: "Four horses arrived on Sunday and another 31 today. They include the horses we intend to run at Newmarket and in the other early Classics, like the French Guineas.

"We have to see what the weather does and it's very important to monitor the well-being of each horse."

Crisford added: "Provided the ground is suitable, Fath is an intended runner in the 2,000 Guineas under Richard Hills.

"He wants good ground, and if there was a lot more rain there would be a question mark. There is a doubt whether a stiff mile will suit him, but he won his trial well in Dubai and we know he'll improve a lot."

Fath is expected to be joined by one of the other four possibles.

Crisford said: "We've left in Bachir and he could run in France if he doesn't run at Newmarket, while Broche looks like a horse who will appreciate a slightly longer distance.

"Zoning ran in last season's Horris Hill and comes into calculations, while Glad Master has no end of options."
