Guides claim UK's tallest living Christmas tree.

GUIDES are laying claim to having the tallest living Christmas tree in the UK. The 140 feet high Wellingtonia is in the grounds of Broneirian, their mid Wales training centre, near Llanidloes. It is believed to have been planted soon after famous industrialist David Davies built the house 150 years ago and is so tall that it can been seen by drivers travelling along the A470 . Claire Short, Broneirion's communications and marketing officer, has carried out detailed internet research and discovered the tallest living Christmas tree is said to be in Sussex. Aberdeen has laid claim to the tallest Christmas tree at 120 feet, which is dwarfed by Broneirion's Wellingtonia.

"We reckon we have the tallest Christmas tree not just in Wales but the whole of the UK. It's the first time that we've ever put lights on the tree and it's very impressive," said Claire.

Tree surgeon Roland Davies climbed to the tree top this week to install the lights. Local businesses have donated of PS25 for a bauble to help decorate the lower branches and PS2,000 has so far been raised for Girlguiding Cymru.
