Writing for beginning graduate students in optics, and especially those in fiber optics, Bures (engineering physics, Ecole Polytechnique Montreal, Quebec) sets out some of the general concepts of guided waves and fiber components like couplers, tapered fibers, and fiber Bragg gratings. There are some spikes of advanced material, he says, but even these stay within the bounds of the guided modes within the scope of linear optics. His topics include vector wave equations, exact vector solutions for waveguides, scalar mode theory, the degeneracy of the vector modes, and fiber splices. Neither title or publication data is cited for the (presumably) French version, but the translation is by Alexander Dupuis, a graduate student in the department, who missed the quote by Confucius.
