Guided bike tours in Oakland.

Guided bike tours in Oakland A relaxing bicycle ride in downtown Oakland may seem unlikely, but a 2-1/2-hour, docent-led tour on a quiet Sunday morning can be a thoroughly enjoyable way to get a bit of exercise as well as a fascinating overview of Oakland's history.

Guides are trained at the Oakland Museum, where tours begin. The 5-mile route takes you past the Oakland Auditorium and along the channel between Lake Merritt and the Oakland Estuary, past the large-scale sculpture in Estuary Park.

As you pedal through Jack London Village and Jack London Square, your guide discusses waterfront history. A detour shows you the produce market with its wooden sidewalks; you continue to Chinatown and the Victorian Row restoration project.

Farther along, you see more diverse architectural styles in Preservation Park, where old buildings have been moved to await restoration for commercial uses. You pedal downtown to see City Hall and the city center complex, pass Lake Merritt again, then return to the museum.

The tour's leisurely pace allows time for comments and questions, for taking pictures, and for just enjoying the view.

Two docents will lead each group of 10 to 12 cyclists. To reserve a place in a group, call (415) 273-3514. Tours leave from the 10th Street entrance of the museum at 10 A.M. the third Sunday of each month through October. Youngsters under 12 must be accompanied by an adult. The route is level and not strenuous.
