Guerra Frontera, Ernesto. You, them and the others.
You wake up one morning and find that the world you knew the day before has changed. Your bedroom has become unfamiliar; your posters and clothes have become breastplates, helmets, shields, and swords. You set out to investigate only to be captured by five intruders who have stormed into the house. They are enormous beings, each named after a particular gift they possess. Through a twist of fate you find yourself free, but soon find out that your life and existence is intertwined with theirs. To THEM, you are one of the OTHERS, deserving of extinction. To survive you must not only achieve understanding of your condition, but the wisdom to change it and create a more harmonious world. It is the classic struggle of running away from your fears, prejudices, and your own intolerant views versus finding the courage to face them and make a better world through intelligence and kindness.
In clear and luminescent prose, Ernesto Guerra Frontera guides the reader through a second-person narrative that sparkles in the most unexpected ways, thanks in large measure to Daniel Frost's artful and seamless translation. "Everything was bright and abundant, as if the world had multiplied--or better, as if your senses had expanded and you could now perceive extraordinary things." This is a short, well-written novel that stays with you long after the last page has been read. It is intended for an audience between the ages of eight and 13, but the original Spanish version could also be used in middle school Spanish language classes, and especially in classes debating or studying themes of intolerance and prejudice.
