Guard Publishing to print Salem newspaper.

Guard Publishing Co., publisher of The Register-Guard, has signed a contract to begin printing the Salem newspaper at Guard Publishing's Eugene facility.
The Oct. 12 edition of the Statesman Journal will be the first to be printed in Eugene. The contract also includes all of the Statesmen Journal's other publications, including several community newspapers as well as advertising inserts.
N. Christian Anderson III, publisher of The Register-Guard, and Terry Horne, publisher of the Statesman Journal, both said they were delighted with the arrangement.
"We're really excited about the partnership," Horne said. "I think it's a natural partnership - our two papers don't compete - and I think the relationship will be really great."
Anderson said, "It's great news for us because, one, it's a profitable business and, two, it leverages ... our great printing quality and allows us to make more efficient use of our equipment."
Anderson said Guard Publishing has hired four additional press operators and will add hours in packaging and assembly to handle the additional work. He said the company is looking at additional part-time hires and increasing hours of existing employees for the packaging and assembly work.
The Statesman Journal had been outsourcing its printing to The Oregonian in Portland, which announced in May it was shutting down its printing operation, Horne said.
"They gave us six months notice that we had to find another printer," he said.
The Statesman Journal put the job out to bid but, also, contacted Guard Publishing directly, Anderson said, because of its expertise in printing newspapers.
The two companies agreed on a schedule of different starting times for printing in order to accommodate the needs of both daily newspapers, Anderson said.
The contract is for three years, with an option to renew. Financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed.
The Statesman Journal is part of the publicly traded Gannett media company. Guard Publishing is owned by the local Baker family.
