Grim moment for Rhyl and Prestatyn; DAILY POST OUR VIEW.

THE fate of Rhyl's iconic Sun Centre is likely to be sealed today, as the private company which runs it on behalf of Denbighshire County Council meets to decide how to respond to the loss of PS200k in funding.

Denbighshire says it has major plans to replace the centre and for Prestatyn's Nova Centre, but is no longer prepared to "fund failure" in running them by Clwyd Leisure Ltd.

The company - which holds leases on the centres until 2022 - yesterday rejected claims by the council that the centres were being badly run, and said it had its own plans to redevelop and improve them.

The centres have all seen much better days, and it is regrettable that they have been allowed to decline to their current state.

Who is to blame for that decline is clearly a subject of dispute between the council and the company.

Whatever the rights and wrongs, however, is clear that improvements are badly needed.

Shutting them down can only be a sensible option for the town if it genuinely paves the way for bigger and better new attractions and amenities both for local people and for visitors.

However this sorry situation resolves itself, it is vital that the outcome is in the best interests of the local economy.

Meanwhile, this is a time of huge uncertainty for the 75 full time and 50 seasonal staff employed at the centres.

Losing these jobs, while at the same time losing famous if faded tourist attractions, would mark a grim moment.

We must hope that, if this is the outcome, it proves to be short term pain for long term gain.
