Gridiron cash boost.

THE show-stopping scenes at the Aviva Stadium yesterday made us bristle with national pride.

The atmosphere was electric as more than 40,000 Americans descended on Dublin to watch a college football game.

The Emerald Isle Classic clash between the US Navy and Notre Dame college was a complete sell-out - and it's no wonder after spectators were treated to such an amazing show.

Apart from the spectacle itself, it just goes to demonstrate the high regard in which Ireland is held across the world.

It is proof that aside from the well documented problems at home we can hold our heads high on an international stage.

Yesterday's fixture is estimated to have generated more than EUR100 million for the economy. It could be worth even more from increased tourism and future investment.

When Barack Obama came to these shores in May 2011 he famously told us: "Is feidir linn."

We must continue to heed the US President's words as we continue on the road to recovery.
