GREENWICH, Conn. -- "From the readers she wears to the bags she carries, Greenwich Accessory Co. has something for every woman," is the tagline for the 10-year-old company owned and run by Christine Sax. But, the succinct statement represents more than just an advertising slogan--it is also a strategy.

"We work with key retailers to develop and grow their accessory category," she says, referring to such goods as women's apparel, wraps, tunics, scarves, reading glasses, sunglasses, handbags and other items. "Our partners, from large retailers to independents, enjoy the added foot traffic that our accessories drive to their locations."

They also enjoy the convenient services that are offered by Greenwich Accessory. "We handle just about everything, including basic conception, product development, packaging, all the way through to merchandising options," explains Sax, who has 25 years of experience in the eyewear segment, working with national and other optical chains in addition to her expertise in apparel.

Today she helms a team that's responsible for sales, marketing and business development. "We work closely with our retail partners to create attractive collections of fashion accessories that reflect the latest trends, using luxurious fabrics and intricate details to make them stand out, while maintaining competitive price points," Sax adds.

Despite uncertainties in the economy, the apparel segment is growing steadily, particularly for quality goods that carry a competitive price point, she observes.

"Our success is due in part to the fact that Greenwich Accessory is a lean, nimble company that can operate on a lean margin and pass the savings along to our retail partners and, ultimately, to their consumer customers," Sax notes.

Consumers increasingly view fashion accessories as an "affordable luxury," she says, and the category is gaining steam.

"We're different than our competitors, because Greenwich Accessory brings department store collections to the value-conscious platform," Sax says. "Our lines are sold under our own brand, Sax, and can also be marketed under private label programs."

The company's goods are inspired by the latest fashion trend and color forecasting, and may look expensive, but "they're priced at a level that enables a woman to buy them without thinking twice about the cost," Sax notes. The Greenwich Accessory scarf category, for example, includes such popular collections as the Pashmina fine in cheetah, zebra, paisley royal and other designs, while the Infinity line is available in such configurations as coral, orange and starfish.

Greenwich Accessory wristlets and bags are available in small and large totes that capture trendy nautical and other themes, as well as such ever-popular hues as silver and gold metallics, and such classic best-sellers as blue and black.

"In today's environment, many consumers are hesitant about buying a new dress, but they can make their older clothes look new with an accessory," offers Sax. "That kind of trend definitely plays to our strengths."

The rise in consumer demand, along with the changing season, is helping to drive sales at wholesale, she adds. "Our retail partners are stocking up, particularly with 'layering' apparel items, like tunics, wraps and scarves--along with year-round sellers like handbags," reports Sax. "In turn, we're ramping up production, and we are expanding our product line. We're also developing new displays that will enable our retailer partners to merchandise Greenwich Accessory products even more effectively, which will benefit everyone: not only our company, but our retail partners and consumers, too."
