A QUAYSIDE gastro-pub is about to broaden its horizons even further in celebration of Oktoberfest. The Broad Chare, near Newcastle's Live Theatre, will be marking the famous Munich festival by serving up a true taste of Germany.

Over nine days, the popular watering hole will be changing its menus and beer pumps so that customers can sample such delights as Bavarian sausages and Hofbrau beer.

This renowned ale - billed as the world-famous Oktoberfest beer - promises an authentic flavour of the German festival and, true to style, the 6.3% golden brew, which is described as aromatic and savoury, will be served in a stein glass.

Oktoberfest on Tyne will see the Newcastle Quayside pub - part of restaurateur Terry Laybourne's 21 Hospitality Group - offer samples of more of the ales that will be appearing at the real deal in the Bavarian city of Munich. Oktoberfest beer festival and fair is already under way there and this year runs until Thursday.

The Newcastle event will start on that day and continue until October 13, with a handful of other pubs in the region also joining the celebration.

The pub, a joint venture with Live Theatre, is classed as one of the Top 50 Gastropubs in Britain and retained its coveted Bib Gourmand in the Michelin Guide 2017.

It is preparing its upcoming menu which will feature hearty Oktoberfest specials and authentic bar snacks so that customers can try the likes of a bratwurst and a beer.

The bar menu will showcase Obatzter - a beer cheese with radishes and pretzel - alongside Berliner Currywurst, served with a Kaiser roll or with chips, and Bratwurst accompanied by German mustard; while the beers on offer will also include Erdinger Oktoberfest, a strong - 5.7% - hazy wheat beer with a strong malty note.

Laybourne's Porterhouse Butcher and Grill - his new eatery in Fenwick Food Hall - also will be taking part in Oktoberfest on Tyne, with Bavarian sausages and beer on sale.
