Great start puts Heed on course for quarters; COLLEGE FOOTBALL.
GATESHEAD Under-18s booked their place in the quarter-finals of the ESFA National Cup with a 5-3 victory over Wyke College.
The Tynesiders made a superb start and were 3-0 up inside the first 20 minutes thanks to goals from Olly Leedham, Adam Wrightson and Ryu Williamson.
Wyke replied with a penaty and another quickfire strike to reduce the deficit to 3-2. Just on half-time Gateshead went 4-2 up when Williamson broke through the Wyke defence and slotted home for a fine solo goal.
Midway through the second period Leedham increeased the advantage to 5-2 with a superb strike from 20 yards.
Wyke pulled a goal back towards the end of the game but Gateshead saw the game out comfortably.
GATESHEAD Under-17s beat |Minsthorpe after a superb performance from super sub Oli Martin.
He came on after half an hour and dominated proceedings with a well-taken hat-trick.
Ten minutes in, a great passand-move sequence was rounded off by Davis Keillor.
Shortly after the break Martin doubled the lead with a fantastic right-foot strike.
Out of nowhere, Minsthorpe gave themselves a lifeline with a free-kick into the top corner.
However, Martin helped himself to two more goals to put the result beyond doubt.
Gateshead will next visit the winners of the Barnsley-Shef-field clash on December 17.
GATESHEAD'S CAT Three |team produced a superb performance to beat Malty Academy 2-1 in the National Cup.
McMahon and Kelly caused problems for the Malty defence all game with their strength and pace.
McMahon was brought down in the box and took the resulting spot kick.
The impressive Malty goalkeeper made a great save - but McMahon reacted first and tapped home the rebound.
The game ebbed and flowed with both teams having good scoring chances.
The Heed made it 2-0 in the 80th minute when a fine through ball from Michael Vasco was despatched with a superb finish by Jake Taylor.
Malty pulled a goal back in the 85th minute to set up an exciting finish.
In the very last minute, Tom Crainey in the Heed goal made a superb save to take his side through to the next round, where they will travel to Greenhead College (Huddersfield).
