Granville Again dies.

Byline: Matt Chapman

GRANVILLE AGAIN, hero of the 1993 Smurfit Champion Hurdle, has died at the age of 17, writes Matt Chapman.

His former trainer Martin Pipe said yesterday: "Granville Again had been enjoying a wonderful retirement in Northumberland with the family of his late owner, Eric Scarth, but sadly died a few days ago."

A son of Deep Run, Granville Again won 12 of his 30 starts and formed a tremendous partnership with Peter Scudamore, who was on board for nine of his victories.

The 1993 Champion, in which he beat Royal Derbi a length, proved Scudamore's judgement to be right after he had agonised over whether to partner stable companion Valfinet.

A year earlier, Granville Again scooted clear of Jinxy Jack for a five-length success in the Grade 2 Scottish Champion Hurdle, while as a novice he defeated Gran Alba by a length and a half in the Seagram 100 Pipers Top Novices' Hurdle at Aintree.

Two of Granville Again's defeats were also notable: when he fell at the second-last in the 1992 Champion behind eventual winner Royal Gait; and when runner-up to his brother, Morley Street, in a memorable 1993 Martell Aintree Hurdle.

"Granville was an absolute star during his time at Pond House with the highlight of course being the 1993 Champion Hurdle

under Scu," said Pipe.

"It was a wonderful day at Cheltenham, when Mr Scarth took the trophy into our owners' marquee. We can all remember it as though it was yesterday. He will be sorely missed and we shall all remember our friend with great affection."

Late in his career, Granville Again was switched by Scarth to Muriel Naughton but was retired after failing to complete in the 1996 Fighting Fifth Hurdle.
