Grants scheme success.

A NEW grants scheme has got off to a great start.

Donations of more than pounds 180,000 have been awarded to 35 local groups since January this year by Kirklees Council's Adult Services.

The groups receiving the funding provide activities for older people, people with physical disabilities, people with learning disabilities, carers, people affected by HIV/aids or people with mental health needs.

Clr Shabir Pandor, cabinet member for adults and communities, said: "These are exciting developments for the people of Kirklees.

" I'm delighted at the activities available for people to get involved in and the willingness of the staff and volunteers to give their time to help others." Among groups to benefit were: . Better Future for the Blind - helping people into jobs which is starting a befriending service.

Ravensthorpe Community Centre's 10-week pilot luncheon club, serving meals and tea or coffee to older people.

Ambitions - a Mirfield charity helping people with learning disabilities into jobs or volunteering.

Friend to Friend - an award-winning organisation for older people with over 300 members across Denby Dale, Honley, Marsden, Meltham and Holmfirth.
