red, white and blue fabrics and strip piecing.

1 About This Quilt

Judy used the traditional Apple Core patch and strip piecing to create the illusion of a waving flag. The stars in her quilt are fussy-cut from a star fabric and finished with fusible raw edge applique. We have given an applique template so you can create this look without specialized fabric.

2 Making the Units Sew 2 red strips and a white strip together to make a band A. Make 4 band A's. Place the template A's as shown and cut 26 unit Vs.

Similarly, sew 2 white strips and a red strip together to make a band B. Make 4 band B's. Place the template A's as shown and cut 29 unit 2's.

Sew 2 red strips and 2 white strips together to make a band C. Make 6 band C's. Place the template A's as shown and cut 55 unit 3's.

3 Assembling the Quilt Center

Sew the units and patches together as shown to make the quilt. Refer to "Fusible Applique" in Basic Lessons to prepare the B patches for fusible applique. Refer to the applique placement diagram. Arrange the

B patches on the blue portion as shown; fuse in place. Use matching thread and a machine zigzag stitch to sew around the patches.

4 Quilting and Finishing Layer and baste together the backing, batting and quilt top.

Refer to the quilting placement diagram. Quilt wavy lines diagonally across the red and white portion of the quilt, quilting around each star.

Bind the quilt.
