Governor Don Siegelman to Honor Alabama Veterans Lost on Sept. 11 and In Nation's War on Terrorism; Memorial Service to be Held May 26.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Governor Don Siegelman, keynote speaker, will honor those Alabamians who have made the ultimate sacrifice on September 11th and in the Nation's War on Terrorism.

Johnny Michael Spann, Major Dwayne Williams, and Sgt. Jeremy Foshee will be honored in a special ceremony attended by their family members and dignitaries. Candace Neal, of Eva, Alabama, and the United States National Winner of the American Legion Oratorical Contest will present her essay on the U.S. Constitution.

May 26, 2002, at 4:00 p.m. at the Alabama Veterans Memorial Park, I-459, East of 280, at Exit 23. The first-of-its-kind Memorial Park honoring veterans from the 20th century will hold a special memorial service honoring Alabama veterans lost on September 11th and in the Nation's War on Terrorism.

In addition, this ceremony will be the official announcement of the Memorial Park's StepStone campaign. Since 1900, the State of Alabama has enlisted per capita more military volunteers than any other state in the Union. The names of more than 11,000 veterans who died in the 20th Century wars are engraved for eternity on the Grand Memorial's inner walls. Now, our StepStone Campaign offers veterans who "came home" a special place for personal remembrance.

Alabamians can show their undying memory and appreciation for all veterans who have served and are currently serving our country. By donating for a memorial "StepStone" marker, you send a message of love and lasting memory of a deceased or living veteran. A memorial "StepStone" is an 8?x 4? high quality marker, laser engraved with tribute to any veteran or military unit. This could be for a spouse, family member, relative, friend or a specific unit, ship, or branch of the military.

The Alabama Veterans Memorial Foundation is dedicated to preserving the legacy of Alabama veterans and fostering a greater appreciation of their sacrifices during the critical times in our nation's history.
