Government warns of very high pre-diabetes rates in Cyprus.

More than one in ten people in Cyprus suffer from diabetes, while pre-diabetes rates are very high, the health ministry said on Friday.

In an announcement to mark World Diabetes Day on November 14, the ministry said that around 10.3 per cent of the population suffers from diabetes in Cyprus.

It added that the prevalence of diabetes in Cyprus is moderate to high based on World Health Organisation criteria, but that pre-diabetes rates are too high and this could lead to a potential increase in type 2 diabetes rates.

This year's World Diabetes Day is dedicated to women and promotes the importance of their access to the essential diabetes medicines and technologies, and the self-management education and information they require to achieve optimal diabetes outcomes and strengthen their capacity to prevent type 2 diabetes.

"Socio-economic inequalities expose women to the main risk factors for diabetes, such as poor diet and physical inactivity, tobacco consumption and alcohol use," the ministry said.

It added that there are currently over 199 million women living with diabetes and this total is projected to increase to 313 million by 2040. Diabetes is the ninth leading cause of death in women globally, causing 2.1 million deaths each year.

According to the International Diabetes Federation, two out of every five women with diabetes are of reproductive age. "Women with diabetes have more difficulty conceiving and may have poor pregnancy outcomes. Without pre-conception planning, type 1 and type 2 diabetes can result in a significantly higher risk of maternal and child mortality and morbidity".

Type 2 diabetes, the ministry said, can be prevented with a healthier lifestyle, including healthy eating, systematic exercise, maintaining balanced weight and avoiding aggravating behavioral factors such as smoking and alcohol.

The main factors contributing to the appearance of type 2 diabetes, the ministry said, are family history and obesity, while 80 per cent of people with this type of diabetes are obese.
