Government set to eliminate illegal logging.

Forestry Minister M.S. Kaban said the government will soon issued a regulation calling for a firmer measure to fight illegal logging which continues to be rampant in the country. The draft regulation is now in the final stage of discussion involving related government agencies, Kaban said. The presidential instruction is expected to be effective in eliminating illegal logging, Kaban said, adding law authorities are expected to be firm in dealing with suspects financing illegal logging. He said elimination of illegal logging has been put in top priority in the program of the government, but the ministry alone could not cope with illegal logging. The World Bank has estimated that illegal logging causes a loss of Rp 30 trillion every year to the state not to mention losses in millions of hectares of forests denuded. Kaban said he has sent a list of 66 alleged financers of illegal logging to the police, but the police have not revealed any result of investigation of the allegation.
