Gossip ruined life for dentist.

A female dentist claims she was sacked after becoming the victim of a whispering campaign, after her boss was disciplined for sexually harassing her.

Denise Merelie is suing health chiefs and 13 dental service staff for pounds 200,000, saying the campaign ruined her life.

Miss Merelie, who worked as a community dentist in Sandyford and Byker, Newcastle, claims she lost her pounds 50,000-a-year job after allegations surfaced she was "too unstable" to care for patients.

She told London High Court she was sacked by Newcastle Primary Care Trust in May 2001, despite the British Dental Association saying the allegations were unfounded.

She claims she was sexually harassed by clinical dental director Miles Ferguson for five years before she complained. In January 2000, the trust ruled Mr Ferguson should have no direct contact with her. Miss Merelie says that triggered a character assassination which led to her sacking. She is now claiming unfair dismissal.
