In a little more than 1,000 SF of Little Rock's Shops in the Heights, Ryan Gossett and Michael Banic have preserved a small piece of 18th-century Europe.

Their store, Gossett & Banic, sells 18th-century European antiques in many styles: Louis XV, Louis XVI, Italian and German. And except for ridding the pieces of centuries of dust, the antiques remain in unrestored condition.

World travelers Gossett and Banic fill their store with items they get from antique dealers in Europe, sometimes at antique fairs that cover acres of open field. From the fairs and flea markets in Europe, the goods are shipped across the pond on containers the size of semi trailer.

Gossett and Banic have so far made only one trip to Europe, but Gossett said the new business should afford them trips to the Old World twice a year, a nice perk.

From mirrors to chandeliers, commodes to books and even Chinese porcelain--they are all antiques Gossett and Banic could see not only on their showroom floor but perhaps in their own homes.

In the store, Gossett's favorite piece is an 18th-century commode, a French chest that has all of its original hardware. Sure, it's technically for sale, but Gossett said he thinks its final resting place will be a room at his place.

"We tend to buy things we like," said Gossett, who has been collecting antiques all his life and has worked in various antique stores.

Banic's background is in interior design. Before this venture he worked for a local designer. Thanks to his expertise, Gossett & Banic will also offer interior design services.

While Gossett's and Banic's tastes lean toward the traditional, Gossett said they like to consider themselves well-rounded. "We can fit our tastes to anyone else's tastes," he said.

Along with antiques and interior design services, Gossett & Banic also offers luxury bedding including comforters, outer bedding, pillows and coverlets, all handmade.
