Gordon Bennett!

Byline: Sally bailey

I HAD to research Gordon Bennett the other day (don't ask) - and found myself a bit fascinated.

He was responsible for "creating", if you like, the first tabloid newspaper. He believed that newspapers shouldn't educate, they should startle - and wow was his idea embraced!

There's a Sunday paper that you can rely on 100% to have a scandal splashed across it's front page every single week.

But do you know why Gordon Bennett is famous as an exclamation? He was engaged to a socialite called Caroline May, and in 1877, her father threw a New Year's party.

Gordon got so drunk, he mistook the fireplace for a toilet and relieved himself in front of the entire party.

The wedding never happened. But at least he holds the GuinnessWorld Record for "Greatest Engagement Faux Pas".
