Google doodle celebrates British scientist Dorathy Hodgkin's 104th birthday.

India, May 12 -- Google has posted a doodle with the chemical structure of penicillin on its home page to commemorate the 104th birth anniversary of renowned British biochemist Dorothy Hodgkin.

Dorathy Hodgkin was born on 12 May 1910 in Cairo, Egypt, and developed a passion for chemistry from a very young age. She started studying chemistry at Somerville College, Oxford, when she was 18. Later, she did her PhD at the University of Cambridge under the guidance of John Desmond Bernal, where she discovered the potential of X-ray crystallography to determine the structure of proteins, while working with Bernal on the technique's first application to analysis of a biological substance, pepsin. In 1945, she published the first 3D structure of cholesteryl iodide.

Dorathy studied the structure of penicillin that Ernst Boris Chain and Edward Abraham had previously worked on. She was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for her work on the structure of vitamin B12 in 1964. She was the third woman to win the Nobel Prize in Chemistry, the second woman recipient of the Order of Merit in 1965 and she became the first woman recipient of the Copley Medal. Hodgkin's also won the Austrian Decoration for Science and Art and the Lenin Peace Prize. Dorathy Hodgkin died on 29 July 1994 due to cardiac stroke at her home in Warwickshire, England.

Google recently celebrated the World Earth Day with an animated doodle. The doodle showed various animals including a Rofous hummingbird, the dung beetle, a moon jellyfish, a puffer fish, a veiled chameleon and a pair of Japanese macaques who wished everyone a 'Happy Earth Day 2014'.
