Goodyear will close its Madisonville, KY specialty tire plant by the end of the year, displacing about 180 salary and hourly workers. Cost competition and market conditions were blamed for the closing. Production will be consolidated at another U.S. plant.

Upon completion of new hirings at several plants, Goodyear employment will total about 1,000 more than were on record as of January 1. Goodyear said most of the recalls were due to actual and expected sales increases of both tires and engineered and industrial products.

Goodyear's Gadsden, AL, tire plant received General Motors' Mark of Excellence award, becoming the third Goodyear facility this year to receive the award.

Goodyear received supplier awards for quality, delivery and productivity from Honda of America. Goodyear supplies the Eagle GA and Invicta GL to Honda.
