Goodnight Receives AITP's 2009 Distinguished Information Sciences Award.

CHICAGO -- The Association of Information Technology Professionals (AITP), a worldwide society of information technology professionals, presented Jim Goodnight, PhD, CEO of SAS, with the 2009 Distinguished Information Sciences Award (DISA). The award was presented by the AITP President during the Awards Gala at the 2010 AITP Member Summit, January 22, 2010 in Chicago.

The DISA award recognizes individuals who have made outstanding contributions through distinguished services to the field of information management.

"On behalf of AITP I'm pleased to recognize the accomplishments of the 2009 Distinguished Information Sciences Award recipient," said Beth Pirrie, AITP President. "Dr. Goodnight's innovative and entrepreneurial spirit, combined with his efforts and dedication to the betterment of AITP and the collective information technology industry, is truly valued. It is an honor to present this award to an industry trailblazer and icon."

Goodnight is CEO of SAS, the world's leading business analytics software vendor, established in 1976. Along with North Carolina State University colleagues, he created SAS(r) software which was originally intended to analyze agricultural-research data. Today, 34 years later, SAS is best known for sifting data for FORTUNE 500 companies and other well-recognized organizations.

"There's never been a better time to be in the information technology industry, and IT professionals have an incredible opportunity to make an impact on the world," Goodnight said. "AITP members are wise to focus on strengthening three core skill sets: business, technical and interpersonal. As a fellow IT professional, I am excited about what's in store for us ... in 2010 and beyond."

Goodnight believes education is critical to the success of people, organizations and nations. He holds a doctorate in statistics from North Carolina State University, where he was a faculty member from 1972 to 1976. His passion for learning has since led him to endow several NCSU professorships and make education the focus of SAS' philanthropy. With his wife, Ann, and SAS co-founder John Sall and his wife, Ginger, Goodnight co-founded Cary Academy in 1996, an independent college preparatory day school for students in grades six through 12, with the goal of creating a model school for integrating technology into all facets of education.

In 2004, Harvard Business School named Jim Goodnight one of the "20th Century's Great American Business Leaders." That same year, he was named one of America's 25 Most Fascinating Entrepreneurs by Inc. magazine, in honor of the publication's 25th anniversary.

He has also been an active speaker and participant at the World Economic Forum, where business and world leaders discuss cross-boundary issues such as international standards, regulations and the global economic issues.

Goodnight joins previous recipients Rear Admiral Grace Hopper, Ross Perot, Max D. Hopper and Bill Gates in this prestigious circle of honor. Candidates are selected by a committee of Association Leaders.
