Golf club man loses job case.

A GOLF club worker yesterday lost his claim for unfair dismissal after 12 greens were destroyed when they were sprayed with weedkiller instead of fungicide.

The accident cost the club about pounds 100,000 in lost business, a tribunal heard.

Head greenkeeper Charles White, 40, claimed he should not have been dismissed in May because one of his assistants did the spraying at Largs Golf Club in Ayrshire.

Mr White, of Largs, sent for extra fungicide but included weedkiller in his order and everything was delivered in one box. He left it unopened and told an assistant to carry on spraying the course.

The assistant picked up the weedkiller thinking it was fungicide. Mr White claimed the worker, who got a reprimand because he was less experienced, should have known better.

But the Glasgow tribunal said Mr White was in direct control of the spraying and there should have been more supervision.

They rejected his complaint and their ruling added he "actually played a significant part himself in bringing about the disaster".
