Golf - the lifestyle of choice.

No doubt about it, golf is big business in Florida. And why not? We have the weather, the water and a retired population that likes to keep active. Florida ranks first in the nation in number of courses, with more than 1,000 rolling greens from the Panhandle to the keys. Golfers spend more than half a billion a year on the sport in this state, buying supplies such as balls, clubs and shoes, and paying for lessons, green fees and food, according to figures from the National Golf Association. When you count the costs of travel, lodging and real estate (as players decide to relocate or buy a second home), golfers and their families pump close to $6 billion into the state economy. And golfers should never feel lonely in Florida: The National Golf Association reports that one in every nine people in the state is a golfer.

In Sarasota and Bradenton, that figure is probably even higher. The game of golf is one of our biggest attractions; in fact, the National Golf Association rated Sarasota the nation's best-supplied market for public golf and Manatee County not far behind. Many of our residents are retired or semi-retired (the median age of Sarasota residents is 48.9 and in Manatee County, 43.3) and 50 percent of these people play golf.

So it's hardly surprising that we have some of the most beautiful and challenging courses in the country. Sarasota, after all, is home to Florida's first golf links, built in 1886 by Scotsman John Hamilton Gillespie. Today, there are more than 50 courses in Manatee and Sarasota, from public to private and executive to TPC, some designed by the top golf-course designers in the profession, such as Ron Garl and Gary Player. Champion golfers have made their home here, too. PGA star Paul Azinger lives in Bradenton and LPGA tournament winner Dottie Mochrie lives in this area. So do PGA champion and broadcaster, Gary Koch, and many senior tour players such as Dick Rhyan and Quinton Gray.

Our golf and country club communities are on a par with our lush tropical courses. We are blessed with a variety of gracious, relaxing lifestyles. From the Manatee River south to Venice, we have luxurious homes in exclusive country club settings; golf course homes on the river, the bay and the Gulf; and villas overlooking nature preserves...It's all here, in so many styles and in so many price ranges that you're sure to find the home (and golf course) that's right for you.

Laurel Oak...for all the right reasons.

Laurel Oak Estates and Country Club in Sarasota's first truly private country club community, and we have all the qualities you've searched the world for. Here behind the gates, you'll find solitude, open spaces and an unhurried, lush lifestyle that's earned Laurel Oak the title Best of the Best in SARASOTA Magazine and WWSB's annual survey of the finest Sarasota has to offer.

Although a new community, Laurel Oak already provides that essential sense of belonging, that treasured sense of community you discover only once in a great while. Top-seeded tennis star Monica Seles has chosen Laurel Oak as her Sarasota home, calling it, "a perfect place." Families love Laurel Oak, too, and the hub of activity is our classic clubhouse, a triumph of design and function that looks like it's been part of the landscape forever. The lifestyle at Laurel Oak goes from casual to black tie; sunbathe, swim laps, ride your golf cart to the clubhouse and head upstairs for lunch; or dine and dance under candlelight and moonlight. Tennis is big, and we have eight soft courts and a golf and tennis shop available.

Golf here is exemplary. Gary Player's first of two "signature" golf courses on Florida's west coast are at Laurel Oak; and he has designed them to challenge the most dedicated golfer as well as to make it a great day on the green for the recreational player. The courses have attracted such rising golf stars as Page Dunlap, who recently became affiliated with Laurel Oak. No wonder; these courses are absolutely beautiful. Whispering stands of pines, rolling greens, winding lakes and natural wetlands surround you.

Only 430 homes will be built on the 813 acres at Laurel Oak, and the signature builders are the finest in the area. Each builder was carefully screened and handpicked for quality, craftsmanship and innovative design. And all the homes will be single-family, enhancing Laurel Oak's sense of community and privacy. Choose from the variety of models or custom build your own home, and then enjoy the best that Sarasota to offer.

Calusa Lakes

Named for the Indians who greeted the Spaniards when they arrived on Florida's Gulf Coast in 1539, Calusa Lakes is blessed with heavily wooded, beautiful terrain. Every effort has been taken to make this a truly outstanding golf course community. An exceptional amount of acreage has been devoted to the golf course. The result is a course where golfers have plenty of room and homeowners can enjoy the view of the golf course without being too close to the action.

The spacious, beautifully landscaped entry creates a mood of pleasant anticipation as golfers and residents enter Calusa Lakes. Once past the entry, a wide open vista of lakes and four golf holes line the winding road to the clubhouse and model center. Abundant trees of many varieties, exotic South Florida birds, and the rolling, mounded terrain of the golf course combine to create an impression that sets the style for the community.

The course itself is a challenge for the best of golfers from the championship tees. Playing in excess of 6,700 yards, it is difficult to master and yet fair. At 6,200 yards from the white or members' tees, the course is interesting and fun, but not a back-breaker. From the ladies' tees, the average lady golfer is in for a good experience -- wide fairways with no exceptionally long shots over water or hazards to ruin the day.

With a total of 28 lakes dotting the area, water accents almost every fairway, yet most of it does not create undue hardship for the golfer. Several holes are carved out of dense pine tree flatwoods, creating an environment of exceptional beauty, similar to Hilton Head on the South Carolina coast. The many lakes and trees create a setting where golfers can enjoy nature on a pleasant afternoon's outing -- as well as a round of golf on a truly championship-caliber golf course.

This same setting provides a real winning situation for the homeowner. A close examination of the homesites reveals that virtually all of the lots have outstanding views, while landscaped borders or sparkling lakes provide privacy from golfers.

Unusually beautiful homesites, on an outstanding championship golf course, located in one of Sarasota County's fastest-growing areas, yet a comfortable distance from the hustle, bustle and traffic--Calusa Lakes is the perfect community for discriminating buyers who seek uncompromised quality and superior value.

The Tennis Center features Har-Tru (soft) courts that are illuminated for evening play. Calusa Lakes homeowners become members of the Tennis Center upon purchase of their homesite. The lush tropical landscaping and beauty of the area will add to the pleasure of each tennis outing.

Calusa Lakes is located in Sarasota County, six miles south of Sarasota Square Mall as the crow flies and two miles north of downtown Venice. Immediately south of the Palmer Ranch, Calusa Lakes is adjacent to Venice's long-time outstanding country club, Mission Valley. It is ideally located where property will appreciate in value and residents can enjoy the advantages of living in the heart of an area of rapid growth. Yet Calusa Lakes is slightly off the beaten path, assuring privacy and rustic charm for its residents.

State and local agencies are planning major road improvements. Laurel Road has been widened to four lanes with a scheduled 1993 cloverleaf access to Interstate 75. New schools, including an innovative $12 million elementary school now under construction about two miles from Calusa Lakes, make this location ideal for raising a family.

The world-renowned white sand beach at Siesta Key is just minutes away, as are the cultural attractions, shopping and dining of Sarasota. The closest beach is only three miles away, and a state-of-the-art marina on Albee Road is four miles from the Calusa Lakes entry. Nokomis Village, at the corner of Highway 41 and Laurel Road, is a shopping center with a major grocery store, bank, and numerous neighborhood shopping opportunities, as well as an indoor ice skating facility.

A limited number of proven, premier builders have been chosen to construct the fine homes which will grace Calusa Lakes. Each builder has been carefully selected based upon past contributions to outstanding design and a commitment to excellence. While competitive in price, each will bring a special style and individuality to the community.

A stringent architectural control and review plan aids in maintaining the integrity of the community and harmony between homes and the environment. A requirement of Calusa Lakes home buyers is that all homes must be constructed by one of the master builders, and construction must begin within 15 months of purchase. The goal of the builder program is to preserve the vision of the community.

Call Calusa Lakes at (813) 484-6004 or visit the Sales Center, east off U.S. 41 on Laurel Road to Mission Valley Boulevard, then turn left and go 1.3 miles to the Calusa Lakes entrance. Sales Center hours: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday; Sunday, noon to 5 p.m.

Johnson is a graduate of Indiana University and a Florida certified general contractor; his most recent developments include Deer Creek in the Palmer Ranch, a 500-home community that has become one of Sarasota's fastest-selling and most successful family neighborhoods. He is also the builder of La Vista and Villa Palmeras at Prestancia, luxury communities overlooking the fairways and lakes of the TPC golf course.

Every community Johnson builds reflects his deep commitment to nature and the environment. He feels the preservation of trees and native habitat is paramount so that each homeowner can appreciate the natural beauty of a site.

"The response to The Venice Golf and Country Club lifestyle has been overwhelming," says John W. McGiffen, chief executive officer for this prestigious 460-acre community.

"Home buyers are coming from all over the United States (primarily from the midwest and northeast), Canada and abroad," said Edward E. Edsel, director of sales and marketing. "The Venice Golf and Country Club is appealing not only to retirees moving in from other areas, but people who are upgrading from other communities in the Sarasota-Venice area." Homesites are from $50,000. Homes are from $150,000.

The premier signature builders from Arthur Rutenberg Homes, Roll Gold Homes, Morton Bros. Homes, Peterson Homes, United Homes and McGiffen Construction -- the names Florida home buyers have come to know and trust.

Buyers can choose from a variety of housing styles and neighborhoods -- lakefront custom-built homes, golf villas, manor homes, courtyard estates and more.

John W. McGiffen, CEO of Venice Golf and Country Club and president of the managing general partner for the property, says that from the beginning, the developers aimed to "set new standards in gracious Florida living." To do that, they've kept density low -- at build-out, there will be only 596 homes on the property's 460 acres.

At the heart of The Venice Golf and Country Club is an 18-hole championship course designed by master golf-course architect Ted McAnlis. Florida Golfer called the course "Florida's latest fairway Rembrandt...a cinch to receive high marks from course raters across the country"; and Golfweek described it as "what a golf course community should be." Centered around the 21,000-square-foot clubhouse are state-of-the-art Har-Tru tennis courts, pro shop, exercise facilities, formal and informal dining and a future junior Olympic-sized swimming pool.

Just minutes away are beautiful Gulf beaches, shopping and the many cultural attractions of Sarasota and Venice. But at The Venice Golf and Country Club, you'll find acres of woods and wildlife, friendly neighbors and a feeling of coming home.
