Golf: TAME THAT TIGER; Monty takes on Woods in Ryder opener.

Byline: By David McCarthy

COLIN MONTGOMERIE was last night licking his lips at the prospect of shooting down Tiger Woods for the second Ryder Cup in a row.

The Scot has been sent out to deliver a hammer blow to America's hopes of winning the trophy by inflicting an opening-game defeat on the World No.1 - just as he did in Detroit two years ago. Monty, right, and Padraig Harrington have been ordered to replicate their stunning success at Oakland Hills when they won the first match out.

The Scot and the Irishman beat Woods and Mickelson 2 and 1 and the home team never recovered. Today they face Woods and Jim Furyk in the 8am opener and Montgomerie can't wait.

He said: "We were up for it the last time and we are up for it this time. It is vital to get off to a good start. When you are playing the world No.1 it's a massive challenge but we know what to expect.

"We are looking for a 3-1 start tomorrow. That would get the crowd going and give us momentum."

European captain Ian Woosnam is convinced they can get his team off to another flier.

He said: "Monty always seems to raise his game for this tournament. He is a fantastic competitor with a fantastic Ryder Cup record, as has Padraig. I thought if we're going to play against Tiger and Jim, let's get a lot of experience out there and two great players.

"Tiger Woods and Jim Furyk is a very strong partnership. Obviously it's going to be a very big boost for us if we can beat that pairing. I think there is an intimidation factor with Monty. He has a fantastic record. My motto is I'm never scared of anybody - not even Tiger Woods."

The other morning fourball matches are: 8.15am - Paul Casey/Robert Karlsson v Stewart Cink/JJ Henry' 8.30am - Sergio Garcia/Jose Maria Olazabal v David Toms/Brett Wetterich' 8.45am - Darren Clarke/Lee Westwood v Phil Mickelson/Chris DiMarco.
