Golf: Golf Doctor; HOOKS,SLICES,GRIPS OR YIPS, HERE'S THE PROBLEM PAGE THAT HITS THE SWEET SPOT.

Byline: With Balmore pro Kevin Craggs - one of the UK's top coaches*

I play with my mates a couple of times a week and one of them is the slowest golfer I've ever seen.

We timed him once and every shot took an average of eight minutes. It's very embarrassing.

We call him Jimmy Snail now but it goes right over his head. How do we get him to speed up?

HUGH SMITH, Edinburgh

Jimmy could be suffering from golf jargon overload - better known as paralysis by analysis.

When you have too many swing thoughts running through your head it can cause you to freeze over the ball to the point where you find it almost impossible to move the club away.

To help Jimmy speed up get him to try this drill. Select a club, stand behind the ball and visualise the shot. Take one or two practice swings, keeping one swing thought in your mind. For example, keep the head steady.

Finally, to avoid freezing up over the ball, use the www technique better known as waggle waggle wallop. Every top player has their own modified version of a waggle and the reason for this is that it stops tension building up and allows the club to move smoothly in the first part of the swing.

A waggle will also keep the grip pressure light throughout the swing, allowing you to achieve maximum club-head speed through impact.

If this doesn't work get Jimmy to start his round on the back nine and tell him you'll catch him up.

I enjoy my golf and have been making progress since I took it up a couple of years ago.

My problem is I have attacks of nerves whenever I play a Medal or any other serious competition.

It gets so bad that I'm a wreck by tee time and my game falls apart. Help!

KEITH GRAY, Glasgow

Nerves can attack every golfer, including the best players in the world. However, we can use them to our advantage.

If you didn't suffer from nerves I would be concerned as it means you're either over confident or don't care about the outcome.

If someone says they're nervous before they play what they actually mean is they're not sure their swing can cope under pressure.

There are 101 ways to combat nerves, from wearing lucky pants to hiding behind dark glasses.

The most effective way to soothe your nerves is to use relaxation techniques. Next time you feel under pressure on the first tee, step back and take a few deep breaths.

Try to picture the best shot you have ever hit - take note of where it was and what it felt like - then collect those positive thoughts and put them to the front of your mind.

You are now in a calmer and more relaxed mental state to make a good swing. Thinking about what can go wrong only leads to anxious and nervous swings.

Always remember, nice thoughts equal nice shots.

It sounds like the shaft in your driver is incorrect for the speed of your swing.

If the driver shaft is too flexible the ball will go left and if it's too stiff it's likely to push the ball right.

Go to your nearest range and try out a variety of different drivers with different lofts and shaft flex. This way you will quickly get to see if it is an equipment problem.

If you discover the club you're using is of the incorrect specification would recommend that before buying another one you seek the advice of a PGA pro or an equipment specialist.

The only way to be properly custom-fitted is to use a computer. This ensures launch angles are investigated and club-head entry into the ball is assessed. It all sounds very technical but it means you leave with the right club.

Companies like Mizuno, Titleist, Ping and Wilson are the market leaders in specialist custom-fitting and it would be well worth a visit to one of their factories where they would be delighted to offer you their services.

Over the years have heard of many different ways to lower your score, but this is a first.

However, if wearing your wife's underwear guarantees you play like the world No.1 I'm sure there will be a few golfers searching for some lacy numbers.

With regards to being found out by your pals, I suggest you collect the winnings and make sure you're not involved in an accident.

I hit different-shaped shots with my irons than I do with my woods.

Can you tell me why I hit a draw with my woods and my bad shot is a hook while with my irons I hit a fade and my bad shot is a slice?

Is it something to do with my A few weeks ago I accidentally put on a pair of my wife's pantsswing? Is it the clubs? Is it both? I was custom-fitted but not using a computer just a manual fit. Any advice would be appreciated.

EDDIE, Dumfries

before a game of golf. Amazingly, I had the round of my life.

Since then I have been hitting the ball like VJ Singh providing I wear her pants.

The problem is I am going away on a golf holiday with 10 of my pals and will be sharing a room with one of them.

What should I do if I am found out?
