Golf: Durant's top start.

Byline: Steve Palmer

JOE DURANT canned five birdies in his first 12 holes to set the pace in the Tour Championship yesterday, writes Steve Palmer.

Durant, winner of the Funai Classic two weeks ago and one of the most in-form players on the circuit, sprinkled in a couple of birdies among his brilliance, but he was looking down on the rest of the field.

Before taking to the course, Durant had been backed at 36 on Betfair, but with a handful of holes to play in his first round the diminutive American was trading at single figures.

Vijay Singh, two under through seven, held favouritism.

Betfair Tour Championship prices at 7.15pm last night - to back (to lay): 6 V Singh (6.8), 6.2 J Furyk (6.6), 8 R Goosen (8.2), 8.8 J Durant (11), 13 E Els (14), 14 A Scott (16), 17 bar.
