COURSE marshalls at Hoylake have generally turned out to be far more user-friendly than at some recent Opens.

Imagine the surprise, then, of a BBC on-course reporter who was told repeatedly "no" when trying to use one of the loos sited on the links for "player only" use.

The Beeb man had permission to seek relief, but the marshall was insistent. It was only when the loo flushed and England's Luke Donald (above) emerged that the reason for his refusal became apparent.
