Golden years for couple.

A MELTHAM man certainly did everything he could to marry his wife, who he's now celebrating 50 happy years with.

A week before Geoffrey and Rita Haigh tied the knot, he had to get Christened - with his then wife-to-be as his godmother and best man as his godfather.

The couple were wed at Milnsbridge Church on March 26, 1960 and have just celebrated 50 years together.

Mr Haigh said: "They wouldn't have let us get married because I wasn't Christened, so my wife is also my godmother."

After the wedding they had a reception for family and friends at Milnsbridge Bowling Club before enjoying a honeymoon in London.

Mr Haigh, 77, who worked for John Crowthers, and his wife Rita, 76, have four children, Adrian and Dawn, and two late children Neil and Graham. They also have five grandchildren.

Their son Adrian flew from Vancouver in Canada to help celebrate their golden milestone.

They celebrated with a party at Meltham Community Centre.
