AETN, the state agency that broadcasts educational programs to Arkansans, recently won two national workplace awards from the American Psychological Association for AETN's programs promoting employee health and well-being. AETN was only one of five employers from across North America to win the 2008 Psychologically Healthy Workplace Award.
AETN's management offers several programs to make it easier for employees to do their job and take care of personal obligations, said Donna Smith, AETN's director of finance and administration. With management's approval, employees have the option of starting at early as 7 a.m. or as late as 10 a.m. for their eight-hour workday. Or employees can work four 10-hour days.
AETN's Executive Director Allen Weatherly "believes that people who can take care of their personal lives are happier, more loyal, more productive employees at work," Smith said.
AETN also tries to help its employees meet their exercise, weight and nutritional goals by providing access to Internet support programs. A 24/7 stop smoking support program is available, and a newsletter that features health tips is given to "all employees.
The policies have resulted in a low turnover rate for the 140 employees. Almost half of the employees have been at AETN for 10-35 years.
