Going Rate For Service

Customers who live in rural areas outside of their telephone company's "base," pay a monthly mileage charge for a private line. Following is a sampling of what some rural customers around the state pay for service:

Alltel Arkansas Inc. charges $.70 per quarter mile. Some of the areas it serves include Marshall, Greenbrier, Elaine, Crossett, Fordyce, Sheridan and DeQueen.

Southwestern Bell charges $.50 per quarter mile. Bell services such areas as Little Rock, North Little Rock, Fort Smith, Fayetteville, Hope, Camden, West Memphis and Jonesboro.

GTE charges $1.25 per quarter mile and serves the areas of Jacksonville, Cabot, Stuttgart, England, Dewitt, Prescott and Texarkansas.

Contel of Arkansas charges $1.50 per quarter mile and serves the areas of Russellville, Berryville, Bald Knob, Star City and Dumas. Contel of Missouri charges $2.05 per quarter mile and serves the northern border areas of Arkansas.
