GOING FOR BROKE: JAPANESE AMERICAN SOLDIERS IN THE WAR AGAINST NAZI GERMANY provides a detailed history of the 442nd Regimental Combat Team during World War II and is a pick for any in-depth collection on the topic. When the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor in 1941 Americans responded with patriotic fervor and thousands of volunteers, including Japanese Americans, rushed to recruitment centers. Most Japanese Americans were turned away and many were detailed. When the army eventually decided to admit second-generation Japanese Americans, it created the 442nd regimental Combat Team consisting of mostly soldiers drafted before Pearl Harbor, volunteers from Hawaii, and other recruits: their voices fill a collection that documents their achievements and conflicts at home and abroad, and makes for a moving story.
