Going back to our roots; POLISH roots in the community.

YOUNGSTERS are to lead a project comparing the experiences of different generations of Polish immigrants in Huddersfield.

About 50 young people from the Adam Mickiewicz Polish Supplementary School in Huddersfield will be comparing the stories of Polish immigrants who came to Huddersfield after World War Two with those who arrived after 2004.

The 18-month project, called 'There's No Future Without The Past', will also be interviewing Poles who married English partners, filming Polish Roma and speaking to non-Polish communities to find out what they know and think of Polish people.

The youngsters will be making a film about Huddersfield's Polish community and significant dates in the Polish calendar, including Independence Day and Easter.

The project has been granted pounds 21,600 by the Heritage Lottery Fund.

Fiona Spiers, head of the Heritage Lottery Fund in Yorkshire, said: "The Polish community has played a vital role in our local and national heritage from the support of the Allied Polish forces during World War Two to the more recent contributions to our economy.

"This project will provide the young people with the skills to uncover and preserve this unique heritage by bringing its stories to life for everyone to learn about and appreciate."
