Go nuts about us!

April is crunch time at the Fitness Farm.

Hickory nut crunch time, that is! Come to the Time Scholarship Games on April 24 and visit our Nutcracker Suite to discover the sweet taste of cracked hickory nuts.

Fourteen years ago, Dr. Charles Spurgeon planted hickory trees grafted onto pecan tree rootstock at the Fitness Farm in Indianapolis. Now those trees are thirty feet tall and covered with nuts. It's harvest time.

Why hickory nuts? "I think that's the best nut God invented," says Dr. Spurgeon, a retired neurologist who lives next door to the Fitness Farm in Indianapolis. "You can't go to the store and buy these things" the doctor said. "I decided I'd have to plant my own."

Now the trees that Dr. Spurgeon has been tending all these years are going nuts, and so are we. You can join us at the Tulip Time Scholarship Games and help crack and sample these hickory nuts.

"The object is to evaluate these nuts and see how well they crack" Dr. Spurgeon says.

Join us at the Fitness Farm and take a crack at those nuts yourself.

Be a Health Nut!

Nuts are not only delicious, they are good for you, too. They contain lots of nutrients like magnesium, potassium, and arginine. Nuts are high in calories, so they should be eaten in moderation. But they also have polyunsaturated and monoun-saturated fats (the good kinds of fat) and reduce cholesterol. This means they are heart healthy.
