HEY, Blumenthal - don't mess with the pie!

(Heston's Great British Food, Channel 4, Thursday).

In his latest series of indulgences and flights of foodie fancy, the culinary chemist began by delving deep into the history of one of our greatest creations.

And yet he didn't cover as much ground as he could have done. Yes, there is nothing wrong with giving us the lowdown on London's pie, mash and liquor heritage - but did I miss the mentions for Wigan's Poole's Pies and Pimblett's and Birchall's pies of St Helens - and many more northern greats besides? And, of course, Heston, being Heston, had to go and spoil a decent gala pie by substituting the meat for beetroot and horseradish ice cream. HorseradishCome on man!

Still, it wasn't a worthless exercise as we again learned a lot from Mr H, while his ego was indulged - and I went straight out and bought a pie!
