Global in challenge on ruling.

GLOBAL radio is challenging a Competition Commission ruling that could see it being forced to sell stations in the North East.

Last June, the London-based company purchased Capital North East from GMG Radio, taking over Real and Smooth in the region.

However, the stations are still being operated separately under so-called Hold Separate arrangements.

The Competition Commission has not taken issue with news announced this week of a shake-up of Smooth operations in London, the West Midlands and Manchester.

It has, however, said Global must sell some stations, including Smooth, in Wales, Scotland, North East and North West England, the East Midlands and Yorkshire.

In March this year it offered to sell Real Radio XS and Gold East Midlands but this was rejected.

A tribunal is therefore set to take place in October.
