Global Democracy.

In mid-March, ten women from the Northeastern province of Kenya arrived in Washington, DC, for a short orientation that included a reception hosted by LWV President Mary Wilson with his Excellency Peter N.R. Ogego, Kenyan Ambassador to the United States. The Kenyans were then hosted for a second year by the LWVs of Wichita Metro (KS) and Greater Tucson (AZ) with in-depth programs on local governance. In June 2007, Rep. Delia Garcia from Wichita and Sally Davenport from Tucson will join the LWVUS deputy executive director and director of Global Democracy Programs, Zaida Arguedas, for a tour of the Kenyans' four home districts: Mandera, Wajir, Ijara and Garissa.

Also in March, nine women political leaders from Latin America and the Caribbean participated in Women in the Americas: Paths to Political Power, a conference co-sponsored by the League and other groups, and hosted by prominent Members of Congress. (See p. 5 for details regarding this exciting event.)

Arguedas traveled to Armenia for two weeks in April to participate in a series of workshops with civil society groups to prepare for that country's May parliamentary elections. The League expects to be asked to continue this work as Armenia begins to prepare for its 2008 presidential elections.

Looking ahead, confirmation was received from the Open World Leadership Center that the League's continued participation in the highly successful Russian and Ukrainian hosting programs has been approved.
