Telecomms solutions provider Global Crossing has been awarded a contract from the Netherlands National Research Network, SURFnet.

Under the terms of the agreement Global Crossing will provide multi-Gigabit wavelength connectivity between NetherLight and Switzerland's CERN facilities. The network will be used in tests with the aim of optimising how research networks are used.

The connection is currently at 2.5Gb/s but this will be expanded to 10Gb/s before the end of 2002.

The value of the contract was not announced.
