Gleeson: My fiddle film fright.

Byline: EAMONN O'HANLON

ACTOR Brendan Gleeson has admitted he almost blew his audition for the American Civil War epic Cold Mountain - because of stage fright.

The star said he was terrified when director Anthony Minghella asked him to play the fiddle to win the role in the Rene Zellweger movie.

Dubliner Brendan, 48, said: "The fact was that Anthony knew my work so I didn't have to read the lines for him.

"But I was nervous because he had asked me to bring my fiddle to see where I was with that.

"I was completely, irrationally nervous about playing a tune for him.

"That was the one time where my fingers were really shaking about playing a tune."

Former school teacher Brendan, who did not take up acting until he was 34, was also a late starter with the fiddle.

It was not until he got to his late 20s that he turned to the fiddle.

"That was far too late, but it keeps me off the streets," he said.
