Give us new legislation says coroner; INQUEST.

A LEADING coroner has called on the Government to implement long-awaited legislation which would give wider powers to inquests.

Dr Brian Farrell told a conference in Dublin that plans to enact the 2007 Coroners Bill fell with the last Government but was not on the programme of the current leadership.

The Dublin City Coroner said the legislation was badly needed and would allow for the development of the new rules of practice and procedure.

Dr Farrell added it would give coroners wider investigatory powers and make obligatory the reporting of maternal deaths and deaths in nursing homes.

He said it would also provide for legal aid to be available for inquests.
