Girls talk.

Cate Blanchett is on course to win an Oscar for best actress tomorrow. The 44-year-old has won a Golden Globe and Bafta for Blue Jasmine and won an Oscar for best supporting actress playing Katharine Hepburn in The Aviator.

Since Woody Allen, who directed Blue Jasmine, never attends the Oscars, could you convince him this time? I could try. Leave it with me. You could win your second Oscar and it's your sixth nomination. How are you feeling? This one took me by surprise. I threw myself at the role. And whenever you do that, you're a bit nervous about the result, because you're part unconscious when you're working deeply. But it's always a thrill, particularly because I've been away from the film industry for so long, working at the Sydney Theatre Company. It's nice to think, 'You know, I've got a film career to return to.' I'm excited more than anything, actually. You are a mum of three kids but your role of a socialite having a breakdown in Blue Jasmine must have been tough. How did you balance being a mum with this film? My children were with me in San Francisco and weren't interested in what role I was playing. They just want their dinner and for you to do their homework with them. In a way, that means your work process has to be really economical. It must be good to have your kids around. Well, it affects your sleep, your dream life for sure. I didn't sleep particularly well.

What was it like going back to The Hobbit? It was brilliant, really fantastic. I didn't necessarily think I would be in it but I think the director and writers looked at The Hobbit and thought, 'Hmm, not many girls in this, we better get a chick in there'.
