Girl quizzed over attack.

Police were continuing to question a 12-year-old girl today in connection with an attack on a five-year-old boy who suffered horrific neck injuries during a suspected murder attempt.

Specialist officers were also continuing the painstaking process of interviewing Anthony Hinchliffe after he was found wandering alone in Dewsbury with ligature-type marks around his neck and bruising to his body.

VAT pledge

Chancellor Gordon Brown promised today to write off the pounds 500,000 VAT bill for staging the Live 8 concert. He pledged to waive the bill for the concert and the clear-up afterwards.

Bodies horror

Police in Austria said today they discovered the bodies of several newborn children in a freezer at a block of flats in Graz. They have issued a warrant for the arrest of a 32-year-old woman suspected in the deaths.

Sound idea

Education Secretary Ruth Kelly announced today a major review of the way children are taught to read. A former Ofsted director will consider whether pupils should be taught to read using a controversial method known as "phonics".

Blair warned

Business leaders will warn Tony Blair today not to bring in sections of the EU Constitution "by the back door". He must hold a referendum before implementing any substantial part of the treaty, they said.

Sailing again

Record-breaking yachts-woman Dame Ellen MacArthur sets sail today for a 100-mile sprint across the Channel to set a new record from Plymouth to Roscoff in France.

Star tribute

Up to 100,000 people, including stars Martin Sheen and Dennis Hopper, were today going to Marion, Indiana, birthplace of James Dean for the 50th anniversary of the screen idol's death.
