Girl power rules as big crowd cheer Tees show martial arts.

COMBAT Challenge North East's K-1 rules mixed martial arts, kickboxing and boxing show comprised 20 bouts in a cage and drew a 500-plus crowd to The Venue in Middlesbrough.

Middlesbrough Fight Academy middleweight Chris Douglass ground out a unanimous decision win over Manchester's Avi Jack in the mixed martial arts main event.

Fight of the Night honours went to female scrappers Robyn Dean and Adele Chantelle, who had a three-round K-1 rules kickboxing war.

Dean stepped in for injured Akurei gym-mate Vicky Field on short notice and earned a hardfought majority decision win over Contender's Chantelle despite giving around five kilograms away in weight.

"We've had four of these events now - two in Hartlepool and two in Middlesbrough - and this was our best yet," said show promoter Anthony Frankland.

"We got a lot of positive comments about the matchmaking and atmosphere.

"Alex Enlund from South Shields has fought on Cage Warriors and had three of his lads on, and said he would definitely come back."

Combat Challenge North East's next show will also be at The Venue, on April 9 next year.

In the mean time, Frankland's Grangetown gym Akurei is joining forces with Contender in Stockton to promote a kickboxing Beginner 2 Winner fight challenge and tournament.

The concept centres around training up raw novices to fight in a competition featuring two opposing teams at Acklam Garden City in March.
