Girl brain power; THEIR IQ SCORES BEAT THE MEN.
IT'S an issue that has long divided the sexes but now women can truly claim to be brighter than men.
Female IQ tests have scored better than males for the first time since they began a century ago. Previously the girls were as much as five points behind and this sparked claims genetic differences made men cleverer.
But the gap has been narrowing and this year women, with the likes of Countdown TV maths genius Carol Vorderman in their ranks, have pulled ahead. One explanation is their intellectual capability has always been better and it is now showing thanks to increased equality.
Another is they are adapting to extra pressures of work while still doing chores. IQ expert Professor James Flynn said: "In the last 100 years, the IQ scores of both men and women have risen but women's have risen faster.
"The complexity of the modern world is making our brains adapt and raising our IQ. The full effect on women is only just emerging. The improvement is more marked for women because they were more disadvantaged in the past."
Prof Flynn collated IQ test results worldwide and will outline his findings in a new book.
His work provided a watershed moment in the 1980s with the Flynn Effect, revealing scores in the West increased by three points every decade and IQ - or intelligence quotient - was not genetic and could be improved.
