Gilchrist sends Port into semis; SOUTHPORT 1 TRANMERE 0.

JASON GILCHRIST scored with three minutes remaining to book Southport's place in the Liverpool Senior Cup semifinal.

The tie against Tranmere Rovers looked to be heading to penalties until Gilchrist, on as a second-half substitute, converted a free-kick from Morgan Homson-Smith to secure the Port's progress.

It had been a tight contest but the home team finished the game on the front foot and their pressure was rewarded with the deciding goal.

Southport had started the game well, Dion Charles twice creating space inside the area but was unable to find the target, while his corner was headed just over the crossbar by Liam Edwards.

Tranmere presented more of a threat as the half went on and they came closest to finding a way through before the interval, Bailey Thompson curling a fine shot against the bar.

The visitors looked to continue that momentum after half-time but while they saw enough of the ball, chances were in short supply, James Devine registering a low shot at goal which goalkeeper Josh Tibbetts was equal to.

With David Morgan, Jack Sampson and Gilchrist brought on from the bench, Southport made changes in an attempt to find a way through.

Charles again went close after venturing into the box before Gilchrist, four minutes after his introduction as a substitute, came up with the winning moment, nodding in a right-wing free-kick from Homson-Smith at the far post. SOUTHPORT (4-4-2): Tibbetts, Richards, Edwards, Parry, Ogle (Morgan 52), Green (Sampson 62), Lacey, Davies, Homson-Smith, Charles, Archer (Gilchrist 83).

TRANMERE ROVERS (4-1-4-1): Pilling, Kerr (Burton 90), Gumbs, Long (Nugent 56), Bakayoko, Devine, Walker-Rice, Spellman, Gilmore, Salkeld, Thompson.
