Gift of Charles Kean material to the Mander & Mitchenson Theatre Collection.

In August 2006, the Mander & Mitchenson Theatre Collection received an exciting gift of six prompt books, a pay list from the Princess Theatre and a scrapbook of Charles Kean's from John and Frances Bennett of California, given in memory of his grandfather, the actor, Charles Bennett. The prompt books, ranging in date from 1835 to 1856, include two copies of King Lear by William Shakespeare, The Iron Chest by George Colman, The Winter's Tale by William Shakespeare, Pizarro; or the Spaniards in Peru by Richard Brinsley Sheridan, and King Henry the Eighth by William Shakespeare and John Fletcher. Each of the prompt books contains handwritten notes either by Charles Kean or his prompter, Stanley Charles Ferrers. The most significant prompt book is Charles Kean's copy of King Lear, dating from 1835, that has his notes and stage directions handwritten throughout the copy. Several of the prompt books have engravings by White and Cruickshank of scenes from the play and each contain a 'Remarks' section at the beginning that was written by Charles Kean. The next item--The Royal Princess's Theatre Pay List for the Week Ending June 10 1859--shows the amounts paid to the actors, actresses, musicians and dancers for that week. The scrapbook, covering material between the years of 1841 and 1875, contains a variety of ephemera such as press cuttings, programmes, playbills, flyers, two letters of correspondence to Mr Everett from Edward Glosser and a cheque for 1 [pounds sterling] to Mr Everett. These items, now in the Mander & Mitchenson Theatre Collection, will be an invaluable source to theatre historians researching Charles Kean.
