The stunning depiction of a thale cress anther - described as "the essence of floral life" - was taken by Dr Heiti Paves in Tallinn, Estonia. A German photographer bagged second place for his stunning image of a spiny sowthistle flower stem.
And a Canadian entry of a light-sensitive material called photoresist, magnified 200 times by Dr Pedro Barrios-Perez in Ottawa, was placed third.
