Getting out while they can.

Getting Out While They Can

Cutbacks on advertising expenditures and lack of new accounts are causing layoffs in Little Rock ad agencies and some are even closing their doors.

John Roberts and Partners will operate |til Dec. 31 and then that's it. Roberts, the only constant in a stream of partners over the last 18 years -- including Channel 7 general manager Dale Nicholson -- says he's ready to pursue other options.

He won't say what he's looking at but admits his business has been hurting over the last 18 months. At one point, his agency employed 18 people, but now he's down to just a secretary, a bookkeeper and some freelancers.

Roberts had national accounts such as Bonanza, local ones such as Ruebel Funeral Home and, most recently, several political campaigns including those of Bill McCuen and Jim Keet.

Roberts, who has always enjoyed a low profile, says he's tried to "promote and publicize my clients -- not myself." And that's the way he wants to go out.
